The integration of ecological practices amongst Built Environment professionals in the Gauteng Province, South Africa

Abstract

The desperate need for infrastructure development in developing countries has given birth to premature sustainable practices. This paper assesses the methods of integrating ecological practices amongst Built Environment professionals in the construction industry of the Gauteng Province; South African. The research was conducted from both primary and secondary based (literature) data. The primary data for the study was collected through a structures questionnaire survey distributed to 200 randomly selected professionals which only 131 received back were yielding a 66% response rate. The primary data was analysed using descriptive statistics procedure. The findings from the study revealed that amending legislations to include green design features, Incentivising ideas relating to greener construction methods and communicating new ideas through conferences, etc. were the highest ranked integration methods.  This Study contributes to the body of knowledge on the integration of ecological practices amongst Built Environment professionals in the construction industry of the Gauteng Province; South African.
