Abstract

Machining is an important part of manufacturing processes. Traditionally, machining operations have been performed using unsustainable methods that neglected the negative effect of these operations on people and the environment. In the recent decades, the world started adopt the concept of sustainable development in order to preserve resources. The scope of sustainable development is very large and covers all sorts of human activities, such as technology, transportation and manufacturing. Sustainable manufacturing is one branch sustainable development that seeks to make machining operations economically, environmentally and socially sustainable. This project deals with optimizing the machining process based on a set of sustainability criteria, which are factors that have to be optimized in order to make the process sustainable. A statistical experimentation approach have been taken, using design of experiments to create an effective experimentation plan. The results from the experimentation have been analyzed using ANOVA analysis in order to combine the effects of multiple variables and find the optimum setting for the machining process. In the next phase of the project, the optimized cutting parameters will be used to conduct experiments to compare the performance of the Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) system against other alternative systems according to a set of sustainability criteria.
