Abstract

Plagiarism is a phenomenon on which various investigations have been carried out, some of general nature and others, more specific, but all of them have tried to measure its existence in specific areas of knowledge.

Although legally speaking, plagiarism is a crime, the analysis of this phenomenon must go beyond the legal position and transcend, to the academic field. In this sense, the role of universities is of vital importance because it is in their bosom where opportunities for plagiarism occur, so that students do not respect copyright, either because they are not aware of it or because it is the easiest and fastest way to respond to academic commitments.

By doing exploratory analysis, this research aims to establish the position of universities in Colombia, based on the legal regulations and also on   the implications that plagiarism has in the process of training professionals in this country.  As a consequence, the official databases of the Ministry of National Education and, the contents published by the institutions on their websites, which, in most cases, are free access, will be used.
