The 5S method is a house keeping method that was first practised by Toyota to inrease productivity and efficiency in the manufacturing system. The tool instils discipline and cleanliness among workers at their work stations to increase efficency by redusing the eight waste. The study aims to establish how Toyota South Africa and its Suppliers were able to improve efficience by using the 5S tool whislt focusing on barriers to to the system.The 5S together with the 2 newly developed 2Ss namely Safety and Security are used in the study. The 7S tool is superimposed on Poka Yoke, Kanban, Cleaner Production, and Green Technologies to remove the barriers in manufacturing thereby improving productivity.
