Abstract

ABSTRACT

The LGBT issue is one of the most sensitive issues in society. The various responses related to LGBT are very varied, some are pro and not a few are cons. Even so, in recent years various works containing LGBT elements are more and more easily found, including in films. There have been many films with LGBT themes in the last decade, especially the Hollywood film industry in America. Film itself is an audio-visual type of communication media that often describes life in society. Many representations are depicted and shown through films, including LGBT, but there are still few films or studies that take the perspective of the relationship between parents and LGBT children. One of the LGBT films with representations of the relationship between parents and LGBT children is found in the film Call Me by Your Name (2017). This descriptive study with a qualitative approach wants to see how the representation of the relationship between parents and LGBT children uses Roland Barthes' theory. The results of the analysis show that 1) The representation of the interpersonal relationship between parents and LGBT children is shown in the behavior and dialogue between parents and children in the film 2) Italian culture as a film setting affects the relationship between parents and LGBT children in the film 3) Elio's parents are also a types of liberal parents who free their children's choices including sexual orientation.
