Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to elaborate multidisciplinary research (MDR) and its empirical study (ESY) in Indonesia. Precisely, this paper elaborates MDR of Product Design Engineering (PDE) and Automotive and Robotics Engineering (ARE); and its ESY of automatic bicycle gearshift within a disruptive innovation (DIN) and design thinking (DST) perspective. The research methodology (RMT) refers to both quantitative and qualitative approaches. RMT of DIN elaborated the consideration of Industrial Revolution 4.0, in which technological advances are revamping the mobility experiences, including mobility using automatic bicycle. RMT of DST emphasizes on its phase, known as empathize, in which the mobility on automatic bicycle reduces human errors that lead to accidents, to ensure liability and insurance. Both DIN and DST leads to specified problem definition that is originated from manual gearshift versus the one of automatic gearshift. Within technical context, it refers to the elaboration of rotation per minute (rpm), infrared light-emitting-diode (LED), photodiode and tachometer. As the result, this paper provides discussion on PDE and ARE through design thinking that comprises comprehensive phases, known as empathize, define, ideate, prototype, test. For further research, within digital context this paper elaborates liquid crystal display (LCD) on bicycle to provide heart rate sensor.
