The Role of Railway Industry in Indonesia's Economic Growth

Abstract

Railway transportation has certain characteristics and advantages, especially in its ability to transport both
passengers and goods in bulk, saving energy, saving space, and using space. high safety factors, low
pollution levels or more environmentally friendly and more efficient than road transportation modes. The
advantages and characteristics of railways need to be utilized in an effort to develop an integrated
transportation system. Therefore, the implementation which starts from planning, construction, business,
maintenance, inspection and testing, and its operation needs to be managed as well as possible to be able to
improve the provision of rail transportation services for the mobility of people and goods safely,
comfortably, quickly, precisely , regularly at a cost affordable to the community. The construction of
railway infrastructure and facilities both for passenger and freight transportation in Indonesia in the last
five years had been prioritized by the Government of Indonesia. Railway development consist of the
construction of Trans Sumatra, Trans Sulawesi, double tracking lines on Java and urban transportation
(MRT, LRT). To anticipate the needs of railway infrastructure and facilities, supporting industries have
also been developed, namely PT. INKA as a manufacturer of rolling stocks, PT. LEN as a signaling
manufacturer, various railroad contractors. The development of the railway industry has a positive impact
on the development of its supporting industries which can be seen from the employment opportunities,
people's income and can be reflected in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
