Over the past year, mechanisms and strategies that fall under the data mining/analytics and business intelligence umbrella have been used to transform large quantities of data into information and subsequently into knowledge. These methods are effectively being used in several industries, for example, in the management of contact centers (or call centers), in financial engineering, and in the management of customer credit (for credit cards), to name a few, disparate examples. With the HITECH act and other efforts to spread Electronic Medical Record’s in USA, healthcare industry is now inundated with data that covers everything from process to practice. Most organizations in the country have employed people with a wealth of knowledge in change management, Lean Six Sigma, and project management, etc., but few were prepared to integrate analytics into their process and quality improvement work. In this paper, we discuss evolution and use of data analytics and business intelligence in healthcare today and future (next decade).
