Modernization has led to high levels of plastic production and consumption. Health, transport, electronics, food and beverage are some of the industries that widely utilize plastic material. Poor methods of plastic waste disposal and low rates of recycling in Kenya have led to massive environmental pollution. Plastic waste is the greatest solid waste management challenge in Kenya as depicted by plastic bags and bottles lying everywhere in the environment, in both rural and urban areas. Proper recycling of plastic wastes can generate useful oi like diesel, gasoline, and other fuels as they are made from similar raw materials. Pyrolysis process as method of recycling of plastic wastes is able to address twin solutions to waste disposal to environment and fuel crisis arising due to depletion of reserves of fossil oils. The main objective of this study to reduce plastic waste disposal by production of pyrolysis oil for multiple applications Since plastic material is made from crude oil, through pyrolysis, it can be turned back to oil. Pyrolysis process involves conversion of plastic waste to fuel. Recycling of plastic waste through pyrolysis has potential to process large masses of mixed plastic waste. It overcomes the challenge of sorting experienced with other recycling methods. Less pre-treatment is required, thus reducing labor, time and costs. The design was achieved through investigation of the design parameters for the pyrolysis process, selection of economic, environmentally friendly and efficient machinery, assembling of the equipment and finally cost benefit analysis.
