Structural forensic engineers specialise in identifying the causation of structural failures within the multidisciplinary field of forensic engineering. This article explores the 17 stages of the forensic engineering process for investigating catastrophic failures and the associated human activities. It aims to identify the challenges professionals face in facilitating the forensic engineering process and the technologies that could minimise human error. Data was gathered through structured interviews with forensic engineers and a legal expert, focusing on several key activities: professional engagement, investigation and inquiry, documentation analysis, hypothesis testing, process planning, document management, and ethical compliance. Process challenges identified in the research include ineffective communication with clients, knowledge gaps with clients, integrity issues in evidence, restricted site access, and cognitive bias. The technologies explored in the article include UAVs, 3D printing, MAT, cameras, non-destructive testing (NDT), AI, CAD, and photogrammetry, to enhance human activities in the forensic engineering process and reduce human error.
