The engineering field college and university students have many diverse options covering electronic, electrical, mechanical, civil, industrial, electronics among others. During the course curriculum, students learn theoretical and practical understanding of engineering and science. In recent years discussion on engineering education has been focusing on modern training methods and specific skills and knowledge a complete engineer, technologist or technician requires. Capital budgeting for acquiring current equipment and technologies is important for the survival of any engineering programme. Once acquired the equipment maintenance is important to ensure functionality and continuing operation of the equipment. Engineering face limited budget allocation, staffing shortages, lack of robust maintenance plans and equipment deterioration due to increasing student enrolments and subsequent use. Equipment breakdown during the course of operation is a challenge in many workshop and laboratory facilities. In this paper ways of improving equipment availability through effective maintenance is discussed in e mechanical workshop at an engineering training facility. A maintenance strategy is proposed to prolong equipment life and operational efficiency of equipment.
