Augmented reality (AR) based training is progressively utilized in the business to instruct personnel in a safe and efficient manner for maintenance activities. This study aims to examine the impact of HoloLens AR-based instructions versus paper-based instructions on performance, psychological effects, perceived workload, usability, and user experience in a maintenance task. Task completion time was used to evaluate user performance. The NASA-Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) questionnaire was utilized to evaluate workload. The usability of both instruction systems was evaluated using the extended System Usability Scale (SUS) questionnaire. The User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) was employed to evaluate user satisfaction about both instructional methods. Twenty healthy males were enlisted for this investigation and assigned to two groups. The initial group conducted the experiment utilizing augmented reality-based education, whereas the subsequent group employed paper-based instructions. The results showed that performing maintenance task using AR instruction led to enhance user performance. Participants utilizing the AR were, on average, 17.5% more efficient than those following the printed instructions. Participants utilizing AR indicated an average 12% rise in perceived effort relative to the paper-based approach. The SUS indicates unfavorable evaluations for the paper-based education regarding both perceived utility and perceived ease of use. The AR was seen as highly beneficial and user-friendly.
