The rise and impact of Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is impacting all areas of our human endeavor, and the headwinds are pointing towards AI in supply chain planning as next on the horizon. Some firms are well prepared, having moved to a single data platform to manage their data, while others are wondering how to assemble their multiple data silos in such a way that AI can draw insight and prediction for their business. The challenge for many businesses is how to implement AI when their business systems are a generation behind. I examine three key preparation steps to address the question “How will you get there?”. First, identify the Knowledge Capital required to lead transformation from within your business. Second, invest in Planning Systems to consolidate plans and transactional data. Third, install ongoing training for Human Capital to assure business continuity and sustainability. Universities have historically provided the training grounds for leaders, but the rapid advances taking place in technology, require an equally rapid response from universities to keep pace, train and prepare the next generation for the increasing challenges ahead where we all co-exist with technology. Furthermore, businesses are yet to truly recognise and renumerate the future skills sets required in supply chain planning to effectively "digitally orchestrate" operations optimally.
