The South African constitution paved the way for the government to introduce the Protection of Personal Information Act of 2013, which is widely known as POPIA in South Africa. This study aimed to understand the state of research related to POPIA and identify trends over the years. This study adopted a concurrent mixed-method approach whereby bibliometric analysis was conducted using Scopus databases and analysed using VOSviewer version 1.6.19 and Scopus Dashboard. The qualitative research was conducted using Scopus AI to identify emerging themes. Findings highlighted that public health has emerged as the most published research topic. This is due to many funding institutions in the country that are in the health sector space, and the Department of Health was on a drive to digitalise public health from 2011 to 2014 and 2019 to 2024. The study recommends that the research be diversified since POPIA affects all sectors. Future research must focus on the impact of harmonising the protection of personal information regulations since countries have different rules, although they are doing business together. This is the only bibliometric analysis conducted in South Africa that included all sectors.
