Managing economic sustainability of a nation requires the aggregation of several indicators and dimensions related to the environment, social factors, culture, economic growth, competitiveness and technology. These dimensions are incommensurable and conflicting. Their aggregation requires some tradeoffs from the stakeholders. Moreover, the decision-making process in such context involves different stakeholders with different priorities and preferences. The aim of this paper is to develop a multi-criteria decision aid model where stakeholders’ preferences will be explicitly integrated within a group decision-making process based on consensus and compromises. This model is based on the concept of distance function where the deviations between the achievement and aspirations levels of each criterion are minimized. A framework for a decision support system will be presented to facilitate the group decision making process and the elucidation of the stakeholders’ preferences.
