LEADERSHIP CHALLENGES OF NIGERIA EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM
It is a public knowledge that lack of leadership or bad leadership breeds problems besetting Nigeria as a nation today. This paper entitled “Leadership Challenges of Nigeria Educational System” seeks to explore the effects of bad leadership on the development of Nigeria Educational System across levels. The need to develop a purposeful leadership, good governance and sustainable development has been the recurring problems in the history of Nigerian Educational System. Leadership in this context can be defined as the exercise of influence by one member of a group or organization over other members to help the group or organization achieve its goals. Leadership is a necessary factor in every sphere of life, especially at the political level where decisions and actions affect the entire members of a nation. The Nigerian leaders mostly fail to achieve their objectives due to such factors as corruption, power struggle, accountability, wrong priorities, and mismanagement of office, nepotism and ethnicity.
This paper therefore concludes that effective and visionary and competent leaders are necessary pre-condition for the progress of Nigeria Educational System. It is a condition that must be available if the goals of Nigeria Educational System are to be achieved.
