Today’s most of the engineering graduates need to have strong communication and teamwork skills including architecture student. They are graduating with good knowledge of fundamental of engineering science, but they don’t know how to apply that in practice of society. Therefore, to improve of architectural education and practice in Asia, it is essential to develop the technique of social design as a project-based learning for the student. They need to have a wider perspective of the issues that concerns such as social, socio-culture and environment issues. This research article presents a process of the social design techniques as a project-based learning. The social design is usage of community participation method in planning and design to provide slum upgrading settlement within the kampung (settlements) in Surakarta City, Indonesia. A project-based learning focuses to solve the problem of Surakarta City that has a problem providing a healthy environment for dense organic-informal kampung areas. Multi-dimensional complexities of the kampung settlement's challenge the student to solve the problem. The goal of study is to examinate how the technique of social design by architecture student will give more experiences for them. Some steps are follows: 1) examining the role of each actors that involve at social design process through field observation of the implementation; 2) Examining the prerequisites for the occurrence of learning outcomes; 3) clarify social design techniques. Two cases project were chosen during the year 2020 and 2021 at Kampung Sub-komunal RISHA, Mojo, Pasar Kliwon, Surakarta. The communal “Padasan” project (2020) and the preference of healthy house at Kampung (2021) are as a pilot project at Kampung Sub-komunal RISHA. This research used descriptive analysis for the project implementation, and qualitative analysis for examining students and community’s perspectives. This research presents the project-based learning is essential for engineering student. Management of time and resources by the students as well as task and role differentiation are very important in project-based learning.
