The major focus for improving the performance of emergency medical systems has been the reduction of ambulance response time by determining the optimal number and locations through the use of mathematical modeling. This study describes the efforts of the Mexican Red Cross institution located in the metropolitan area of Monterrey, México to reduce ambulance response time. A geospatial - time analysis and a double coverage mathematical model are applied based on a 35,400 emergency call database generated during 2016.
The application of the double coverage model is executed for the chosen scenarios. A pilot test for the selected strategy was defined as the first step before its definitive implementation. After one month of the pilot test, the response time has decreased and 85% of the emergency calls have been less than ten minutes.
