3D printing and CAD/CAM design is the technology with the biggest increase over the last six years; with market and patent creations increasing tenfold since 2013. Students in all fields have a need to learn these skills to become part of the technological world we are reaching. For the majority of that timeframe these technologies have also been mostly closed and used only from STEM classes, limiting the access to students in other fields.
[Name removed] has a 3D open printing program at [name removed] and is currently top ranked 3D printing programs in both users and printouts throughout the US. This program has achieve its success while utilizing less than 10% of the printers and staff of much larger programs and also has multidisciplinary approach in its program including fields outside of just STEM. The program is ran mostly by part-time students has been steadily increasing year by year having Impacted more than 1000 students last semester, now even in an introduction to history classes.
This paper will share the reasons behind the projects’ success, and the impact it has had on students from all fields; . Including also how students themselves are a key part of the program.
