In recent years, there has been growing attention on patient safety due to the high rate of medical errors. In order to improve patient safety, systems approaches have been adapted to help identify patient safety risks within the scope of risk management.
In this study, a review of the literature on systems approaches is carried out inpatient safety context. Despite their limited utilization in healthcare patient safety context, the findings proved that systems approach provided valuable insights to comprehensively identify and mitigate patient safety risks. Further, this study provides the opportunities and challenges to implementing the systems approaches in a patient safety context. The paper presents valuable outcomes for healthcare researchers and practitioners.
