Abstract- Fire safety refers to precautions that are taken to prevent or reduce the likelihood of a fire that may result in death, injury or property damage, alert those in a structure to the presence of an uncontrolled fire in the event one occurs. Fire safety measures include those that are planned during the construction of a building or implemented in structures that are already standing, and those that are taught to occupants of the building. Threats to fire safety are referred to as fire hazards.
A fire hazard may include a situation that increases the likelihood a fire may start or may hamper escape in the event a fire occurs. Developing an organization's specific compliance program that is appropriately tailored to the nature of an organization’s export and re-export activities, an organization can implement an effective compliance program that works well. Safety practices are the part of compliance which gradually increases company’s goodwill as well as employee’s satisfaction and fire safety issues are the most important in compliance management. Every organization needs a safety management plan (SMP) that uniquely addresses their organization-specific requirements. Due to high labor intensive in nature, the density of workers in factory floor is very high. This high density of workers results in a large number of injuries and fatalities in the event of a fire accident. In order to improve the fire safety in RMG sector of Bangladesh, it is important to understand and quantify the current state of affair in fire safety of the garments factories in the country. It need to be remembered that occupational safety is the fundamental right of every employee. Safety issues are intrinsically linked with the productivity of the employee.
This paper discusses in brief the fire safety issues of RGM sector like causes of fire accidents, casualty in RGM factory due to fire, reasons for fire, emergency response to fire, health safety matters, work environment of the employee and availability of firefighting equipment in selected garment factories and smoke ventilation. Data from 25 knitting garment factories have been collected by direct investigation. From the analysis it has been found that factories are running without maintaining safety equipment standard after several incidents. Heat detector, first aid box. Authorities need to be strict to minimize the losses of lives in garment factories due to fire incidents. Among 25 factories only 32 % factories maintain fire extinguisher standard, 68 % do not maintain their standard. Among 25 factories only 40 % factories maintain fire drill standard, 60 % do not maintain their standard. Among 25 factories only 16 % factories have fire trained employee according to standard, 84 % do not have their standard wise fire trained employee.
