Biography

Dr. John H. Kempen is Director of Epidemiology for Ophthalmology/Senior Scholar, Massachusetts Eye and Ear/Schepens Eye Research Institute, and Professor of Ophthalmology, Harvard Medical School. He is President of Sight for Souls, a charity developing self-sustaining eye care systems in developing countries. He serves as Chair for the Systemic Immunosuppressive Therapy for Eye Diseases (SITE) Cohort Study, Chair of the FLAME Trial (about trachomatous trichiasis surgery in Ethiopia), Vice Chair of the MUST Research Group and recently stepped down as Editor-in-Chief of Ophthalmic Epidemiology, as well as serving on the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Ocular Immunology and Inflammation and the Journal of Ophthalmic Inflammation and Infection Editorial Boards. He is a core member of the Vision Loss Expert Group. He is an author of about one-third of the manuscripts selected by the American Uveitis Society as the most important of the year for residents to study since the program began in 2009, and has published manuscripts cited approximately 19,000 times. He practices uveitis most of the year in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia at MyungSung Christian Medical Center/Medical School, and has developed a uveitis fellowship there.
