P.S. 228Q The Ivan Lafayette Early Childhood Magnet School of the Arts
I am a proud Colombian educator who came to the United States with the strong desire to learn and to teach. From the beginning, I knew that my passion was in education, but like many immigrants, I faced the challenge of having my academic background recognized. Over time, my studies from Colombia were approved, and that allowed me to begin my journey in the classroom.
I started working as a substitute teacher—filled with nerves but also determination. Every day brought new lessons, not just for the students, but for me as well. I had the privilege of learning from incredible teachers who kindly extended a helping hand, shared their knowledge, and believed in my potential. Their support gave me the confidence to keep growing professionally. I enrolled in courses, built my skills, and never stopped learning.
One day, a principal gave me a life-changing opportunity: to become a bilingual teacher in an elementary school. That trust meant the world to me, and I was ready. Since then, I have dedicated myself to creating a safe, welcoming space for all students—especially those who are new to the country and need someone who speaks their language and understands their journey.
It is my mission to help every child feel proud of who they are, supported in their learning, and encouraged to dream big. I believe language should never be a barrier to success, and I’m committed to being the teacher I once needed when I first arrived.
Evelyn Gómez.
