Guided by values of justice, empowerment, and community partnership, I conduct community-based research to develop and evaluate interventions to promote equitable developmental, educational, economic, and health outcomes for children and families. Much of my research has focused on efforts to strengthen and expand culturally responsive, two-generation, and dual language approaches to early care and education to prepare diverse children and families for success in school and life. Relatedly, I have recently led community-based research and evaluation projects to increase access to careers in early education for Spanish-speaking and immigrant teachers and prepare early educators to implement best practices for dual language learners. As a separate, but related area of focus, my work also aims to build strong communities and economic opportunity systems that activate diverse families’ social capital, empowering them to achieve their goals, lead change efforts, and promote equity.
