Mr. Klipfel received his Ph.D. in Quantum Chemistry from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, in 2007. He then worked for three years as a research fellow at the Karlsruhe site of the Joint Research Centre, specializing in materials research for Generation IV nuclear fuels. He joined KTE in 2013, focusing on the development of glass chemistry for HLLW vitrification. Since 2019, he has been in charge of the remote dismantling of the Karlsruhe vitrification facility (VEK), one of the most challenging decommissioning and dismantling project of a nuclear facility in Germany. Since 2021, he has also been Deputy Head of Decommissioning of the Karlsruhe reprocessing plant (WAK).
