Biography

Dr. Hanks is a Project Scientist and Lecturer in the Department of Nuclear Engineering (NE) at UC Berkeley. She earned her BS in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Washington, followed by a PhD in high-energy nuclear physics from Columbia University. In 2015, Dr. Hanks joined UC Berkeley, holding a joint position in Physics and NE. Her responsibilities included expanding the outreach program, RadWatch, hosted by the NE department. She then transitioned to working solely in nuclear engineering, contributing to novel detection and deployable radiation and contextual sensor system projects. She continues to expand RadWatch, launching a high school internship program, and has designed a related introductory undergraduate course.
