Biography

Fred Dermarkar was appointed in February 2021 as AECL’s President and CEO to lead the organization in delivering its mandates which include managing Canada’s radioactive waste, enabling innovation in nuclear science and technology through Canada’s largest science complex, the Chalk River Labs, and deriving optimal benefit to Canada from its ownership of CANDU reactor technology. Prior to joining AECL, Fred was President and CEO of the CANDU Owners Group, where he led the not-for‐profit organization to advance collaboration between CANDU nuclear reactor operators worldwide. Fred has also occupied a variety of senior leadership positions at OPG in support of the design, commissioning, operation and refurbishment of its CANDU reactors
