Biography

Dr. Benjamin McManus is a Developmental Psychologist, Associate Professor in The University of Alabama’s Institute for Social Science Research, and Assistant Director in the UA TRIP Laboratory. He manages and programs the TRIP lab’s state-of-the-art driving simulator. Dr. McManus has expertise in information processing, attention, human factors, and driving safety in a variety of populations, including workers, adolescents, individuals with developmental disabilities, and older adults. His research focus is occupational injury prevention through the identification of workplace risk factors affecting worker well-being and subsequently impacting critical safety outcomes, namely driving safety. He has 35 publications across a variety of journals including Accident Analysis and Prevention, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied, Journal of Sleep Research, and American Journal of Surgery. Dr. McManus has received funding from the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) and the CDC’s National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for his work, most recently as PI on a NIOSH funded longitudinal K01 examining sleep, fatigue, and stress as risk factors for motor vehicle crash risk in surgical residents.
