Biography

Dr. Robert Sottilare is the Vice President of Training Solutions at Soar Technology, LLC (SoarTech). He was previously SoarTech's Director of Learning Sciences and joined SoarTech in 2018 after completing a 35-year federal career in both Army and Navy training science and technology organizations. Dr. Sottilare has 40 years of experience as an engineer, scientist, professor, and program manager for training science and technology projects in industry (5 years), government (35 years), and academia (4 years). He has published over 300 peer-reviewed technical papers as part of his research and earned over 3200 citations (h-index = 29; i10 index = 65; see Google Scholar). His research and development experience covers networked simulations, distributed simulations, distributed teams, adaptive training methods, simulation augmentations, artificial intelligence methods for training, testing, and analysis, and simulation interface design. Dr. Sottilare’s achievements include several edited books including the first six volumes of the Design Recommendations for Intelligent Tutoring Systems book series. He is the creator of the award-winning Generalized Intelligent Framework for Tutoring (GIFT), an open-source adaptive training architecture, and in 2009 earned a patent (U.S. Patent 7,525,735) for his work on high resolution, head mounted projection displays. Dr. Sottilare has been honored as the recipient of the U.S. Army Meritorious Civilian Service Award (2018) for Research & Technical Excellence, the National Training and Simulation Association’s (NTSA’s) Governor’s Award for Lifetime Achievement in Modeling & Simulation (2015), the Modeling & Simulation Lifetime Achievement Award, U.S. Army Research Development & Engineering Command (2012; inaugural recipient), and the U.S. Army Achievement Medal for Civilian Service (2008) for Research Excellence.
