Biography

Timothy Schatz (Ph.D. Physical Chemistry) is a Senior Scientist at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. He is an expert in the requirements, design and performance of engineered barrier systems for the disposal of radioactive waste in geological repositories and surface facilities. Dr. Schatz has performed studies related to the long-term physico-chemical behavior of swelling clay materials in buffer and backfill engineered barrier systems, identifying and understanding processes during the early saturation of these systems, the installation, load stability and water uptake of backfill foundation layers and establishing quality control procedures for procured, raw materials and manufactured components in bentonite buffer and backfill production line activities.
