Roger A. Nelson Chief Scientist - retired Waste Isolation Pilot Plant Carlsbad Field Office U.S. Department of Energy Roger Nelson has almost 50 years experience in environmental programs for both public and private sectors. As Chief Scientist for the U.S. DOE Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) from its opening until 2016, he served as principal scientific advisor for WIPP. He focused on development of innovative, cost-effective waste handling, treatment, characterization, packaging, transportation, and disposal technologies. After retirement, he continues to promote WIPP as a national treasure for the permanent isolation of long-lived radioactive wastes, regardless of origin.
