Biography

Paul Thompson has worked 33 years in the field of nuclear waste disposal R&D and project implementation. He joined AECL in 1983 just before the start of excavation for the Underground Research Laboratory (URL) in Manitoba as a geotechnical engineer. In 2005 he became manager of the URL and he managed the closure of the underground excavations which was completed in 2012. He is currently manager of the Waste Disposal Technology Branch in Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) and since 2006 he has managed a feasibility study for a conceptual geologic repository for ILW at CNL's Chalk River Laboratories site.
