Upon graduation from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne in 1996, Squadron Leader Rob Hurcomb commenced officer training and graduated to front line operations as a helicopter navigator in 2001. He completed multiple tours of Northern Ireland, Iraq, Bosnia, and Afghanistan over the next 6 years. In 2007 he re-trained as a helicopter pilot and was sent to the Search and Rescue (SAR) Force where he completed over 150 UK-based rescues and a year of SAR Force command in the Falkland Islands. In 2016 he became a Qualified Flying Instructor and delivered Elementary Flying Training to pilot trainees, RPAS trainees and university students. In 2020 he completed another tour of Afghanistan, this time as a liaison officer in a small US Army unit. He then joined Central Flying School where he managed Human Performance projects, including the study of airmanship, and taught instructor training. Another command tour in the Falkland Islands followed before he joined the Directorate of Flying Training where he currently manages front line assignment of graduating military pilots.
He has a wife, two daughters, two dogs and is a keen kitesurfer and general outdoor sportsman.
