Biography

John S. Applegate, JD, is the James Louis Calamaras Professor of Law in the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, and he served in the university’s senior leadership from 2008-2022. He teaches and has written extensively in environmental law. He served on the DOE Environmental Management Advisory Board from 1994-2001, and served on several National Academies studies and the National Academies' Nuclear and Radiation Studies Board. Applegate chaired the first Study Committee on Supplemental Treatment of Low-Activity Waste at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, and he currently chairs the follow-up study. He was named a NASEM National Associate in 2020.
