Bishop McNamamara Catholic School
Esmeralda Elvir serves as the Assistant Principal at Bishop McNamara Catholic School in Kankakee, IL. Born in Mexico City and raised in Chicago, she experienced firsthand the challenges of navigating a new country, language, and culture as a teenager. These experiences continue to shape her passion for education and her commitment to serving immigrant and Latino communities. Esmeralda began her journey at Kelvyn Park High School and the City Colleges of Chicago before moving to Kankakee County, where she earned an Associate of Science from Kankakee Community College. She went on to receive her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Governors State University and taught at Aquinas Catholic Academy before joining Bishop McNamara Catholic School. Over the years, she has taught multiple grade levels and subjects, always dedicated to building strong relationships with students and families. Her commitment to professional growth led her to earn a graduate certificate in English as a New Language from the University of Notre Dame, complete the LEAD 2 program, and participate in the Latino Enrollment Institute and ADELANTE Conference. In 2021, she earned a Master’s in Educational Leadership with a Principal Endorsement from Lewis University, which opened the door to leadership roles, including Director of Student Success and now Assistant Principal. She is currently pursuing her Doctor of Education in Leadership for Teaching and Learning at Lewis University. Esmeralda lives in Bradley, IL with her husband, Alejandro. Rooted in faith, family, and service, she is passionate about empowering Latino youth and inspiring transformative change.
