Dr. Regla Isabela Carias-Vázquez
Principal, Fostertown School
A native of Brooklyn and a proud first-generation Honduran American, Dr. Regla Isabela Carias-Vázquez believes that biliteracy is a transformative gift that opens doors to the world. Over her 23-year career, she has remained a steadfast advocate for linguistic diversity as an academic and cultural asset.
Since joining the Newburgh Enlarged City School District in 2007, Dr. Carias-Vázquez has served the community in diverse capacities—as a teacher, instructional coach, and assistant principal—before stepping into her current role as Principal of Fostertown School. Her leadership is deeply informed by her doctoral research, which examines Latina leaders and how their lived experiences and representation can impact the success of students. By bridging research with practice, Dr. Carias-Vázquez partners with families to ensure students embrace their heritage as a source of strength. She works tirelessly to show young people that their bilingualism and identity are superpowers, honoring her belief that education should empower students to lead wherever they go and prove that anything is possible.
