Dr. Newman-Casey is a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in the medical, laser and surgical management of glaucoma and cataract. This position gives her a deep awareness of the difficulties patients face in managing their glaucoma. She is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center. She completed medical school (2007), residency (2011) and fellowship (2013) at the University of Michigan. She holds a master’s degree in Health Services Research (University of Michigan, 2012). She is the Co-Director of the Kellogg Center for eHealth. Her current NIH and Research to Prevent Blindness-funded research is focused on testing a technology based behavioral intervention using motivational interviewing to improve glaucoma self-management support. Her current CDC funded research is focused on leveraging telemedicine and eHealth to improve screening and treatment for glaucoma and other eye diseases in community clinics. With support from the American Glaucoma Society and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, she developed and pilot tested a training protocol to train health care providers in brief glaucoma specific motivational interviewing. The personalized glaucoma coaching program delivers “precision medicine” by delivering “precision education and counseling” – advice and conversation that can meet each patient’s unique needs and preferences. Her career goal is to improve how we deliver ophthalmologic services to our patients to best support their disease self-management.
