Dr. Weinreb is the Distinguished Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology at the University of California, San Diego. He also is Director of the Shiley Eye Institute, Director of the Hamilton Glaucoma Center, holder of the Morris Gleich, MD Chair of Glaucoma and is appointed as Distinguished Professor of Bioengineering.
Dr. Weinreb received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, and was both a resident and fellow at the University of California, San Francisco. He is past President of the American Glaucoma Society (AGS), the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), the Foundation of the American Glaucoma Society, the World Glaucoma Association (WGA), and the Latin American Glaucoma Society. With continuous R01 funding since his residency, his glaucoma research is diverse and extends from the front to the back of the eye. Dr. Weinreb has been the recipient of numerous awards and prizes, and his h-impact factor in January 2024 was 148. He has trained more than 170 post-doctoral Fellows in Glaucoma, including 26 Chairs and many others who hold distinguished academic positions in the United States and throughout the world. He is the recipient of the World Glaucoma Association Laureate Award (June, 2023), Top 2 on the 2023 Ophthlamologist Powerlist as most influential ophthalmologist in the world (March 2023), Honoree of the American Glaucoma Society (March, 2024.
