Omolola " Lola" Idowu received her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree (MBChB) at Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria graduating at the top of her class with numerous educational awards.
She went to complete the basic subspecialist training in Ophthalmology in the UK becoming a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. In 2003 she worked as a glaucoma research fellow at Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia after which she completed a medical internship and an ophthalmology residency at the Howard University Hospital in Washington DC in 2008. Her continued interest in glaucoma led her to pursue further training as a clinical fellow at Ochsner Medical Center, New Orleans, Louisiana.
She started her career at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson where she trained residents for 10 years before moving to University of Maryland where she is currently an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology. She has a keen interest in medical education and enjoys passing on her great fund of knowledge. She returns often to Nigeria where she trains local ophthalmologists in glaucoma surgery. She has inspired successive residents to pursue glaucoma as a sub-specialty.
Dr Idowu has a keen interest in research. She is a reviewer for the Journal of Glaucoma and has authored several articles in peer-reviewed journals and presented her research at various academic meetings including the National Medical Association of America. She is a member of multiple professional societies including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Glaucoma Society, Association for Research and Vision in Ophthalmology, National Medical Association and International Society of Spaeth Fellows.
She has an interest in international glaucoma education and skill transfer and works with Cure Glaucoma Foundation to teach glaucoma surgical skills around the world.
She enjoys photography, literature and spending time with her family.
