Biography

Sylvia is a transnational first-generation educator raised between Chicago and Zacatecas, México, which established her passion for her native tongue and the acculturation of her Mexican and American identities. She taught for 7 years in bilingual and dual language settings across 1st, 2nd, 5th, and 7th grades. Sylvia spent another 7 years as an administrative leader, developing the bilingual program across the KIPP Chicago region’s eight schools. Sylvia obtained a Master's degree in Urban Bilingual Education in 2013 from Cardinal Stritch University and a Masters in School Leadership with Principal endorsement in 2022 from Northeastern Illinois University. She looks forward to continuing her third year of doctoral studies at UIC in the Literacy, Language, and Culture program within the department of Curriculum & Instruction. Sylvia enjoys listening to NPR podcasts and audiobooks. She has run the 6 World Marathon Majors and aims to run a half marathon in each of the 50 states before age 50!
