The Renewable Energy Master Plan of Ghana (REMP, 2019), reports that renewable energy usage will increase from 42.5MW in 2015 to 1363.63MW by 2030; mainly due to a joint collaboration between governments and corporate bodies to control the carbon footprint in the atmosphere. The deployment of solar Photovoltaics (PV) has grown at a faster rate from 2021 to 2025 than it did the years before and so, there is the need to properly operate and maintain the renewable systems in order for it to remain competitive in the market.

This study presents a methodological protocol or checklist and mobile application for Solar PV Operation and Maintenance Protocol (OMP) for Ghana’s solar PV projects. Results of a technical survey indicate that out of 31 solar technicians and engineers, only 19% of solar PV projects have single contractors on site to provide routine maintenance, 71% do not have a standard operating procedure and engineer for routine maintenance and 2 out of 4 companies across the country are not proactive on solar PV maintenance to prevent unplanned maintenance. Again, there was a deduction of poor operation and maintenance culture and is recommended that using solar PV and OMP could improve the current status quo for an invaluable optimizing of energy efficiency.
