Dr. Yacoub Aljaffery is a professor of ESL education at Augsburg University, where he prepares future educators to teach multilingual learners with an emphasis on asset-based and culturally responsive practices. A former refugee and English learner himself, Dr. Aljaffery draws from both lived experience and academic research to center the voices and strengths of refugee and immigrant students in his teaching and scholarship. His work focuses on translanguaging, educational equity, and the cultural and linguistic wealth of students from refugee backgrounds. He has published on these topics and regularly presents at national and regional conferences. Dr. Aljaffery is also the founding director of the Minnesota Multilingual Educators Center, which supports and uplifts multilingual educators and learners across the state. His scholarship and advocacy seek to transform how educators perceive and support students with interrupted or nontraditional educational journeys.
