Biography
Dr. Celso Tello is Professor and Chairman Emeritus of the Department Ophthalmology and Director of the Glaucoma Center at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, Zucker School of Medicine, Hofstra/Northwell. Dr. Tello is also Vice-President of Northwell International Ophthalmology Development, Director of the Northwell Eye Institute-Wachenheim Center at Harrison, NY and Medical Board member of the Northwell Eye Institute IPA. Dr. Tello completed his Ophthalmology Residency and Fellowship training in Glaucoma at the New York Eye & Ear Infirmary and practiced at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and Glaucoma Associates of New York for 15 years (2000-2015). Dr. Tello was Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Lenox Hill Hospital/Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital (MEETH) from January 2015 to December 2024. Dr. Tello is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and received the American Academy of Ophthalmology Senior Achievement Award in 2017. He is member of many prestigious organizations, including the American Glaucoma Society for which he served as Chair of the organization’s Nominating Committee and Chair of the Nominating Committee of the American Glaucoma Society Foundation. Dr. Tello is also an active member of the World Glaucoma Society, the Pan-American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Medical Association and is a Fellow of the prestigious American College of Surgeons. Dr. Tello previously served as President of the New York Glaucoma Society, President of the New York Society for Clinical Ophthalmology and Chairman of the Scientific Section of the Pan-American Academy of Ophthalmology. During his tenure at New York Eye & Ear Infirmary, Dr. Tello was Co-Director of the Glaucoma Service and Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology and he was presented with numerous awards including the Residents’ Award for Outstanding Teaching, and the Infirmary Award for Excellence in Patient Care and Research. Dr. Tello is the author or co-author of over 340 medical and scientific papers, book chapters, and abstracts, and has lectured nationally and internationally on Glaucoma, Cataract and other leading causes of blindness. His research has been focused on understanding the underlying mechanism, diagnosis and management of different types of glaucoma including Angle-closure Glaucoma, Pigment Dispersion Syndrome, Exfoliative Glaucoma, Normal-Tension Glaucoma and other forms of secondary glaucoma. His research work on High-Resolution Ultrasonography and Electrophysiology has led to new and more effective methods for early diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of the different types of glaucoma. In addition to Resident education, Dr. Tello has trained over 100 clinical and research Fellows, mentor over 120 international Ophthalmologists and he has been devoted to Eye Care Global initiatives throughout his career, for which has received many recognitions including the Ecuadorian National Congress Award in 2017 and 2023 for his significant contribution in training local Ophthalmologists and implementing programs to prevent blindness in the rural areas of Ecuador.
