Biography

Dr. Tatiana Joseph is an Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she leads the Second Language Acquisition Program and is deeply committed to advancing educational opportunities for multilingual learners. As a 1.5 generation immigrant and former English Language Learner, her personal experiences with discrimination and racism shaped her passion for equitable education. Dr. Joseph’s research focuses on First Language Maintenance, Culturally Responsive Teaching, Critical Race Theory, and curriculum development. She also serves as Program Director for the Bilingual, ESL, and World Language K-12 Teacher Certification Program at UW-Milwaukee, where she oversees program administration, instruction, and research. In addition to her university work, Dr. Joseph regularly leads professional development for pre-service and in-service teachers on first and second language instructional methodologies, as well as fostering effective collaboration between language educators and classroom teachers. Beyond the university, Dr. Joseph has served as a School Board Director for Milwaukee Public Schools, advocating for inclusive, high-quality education in the community where she was raised. She currently serves as Principal Investigator for Preparing Inclusive Early Childhood Educators, a federally funded project through the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA), which bridges research, teaching, and advocacy to create impactful learning environments for all students.
