Biography

Dr. Craighead is a lead scientist at SoarTech where his research is focused on applications of AR and VR for the warfighter, stealth assessment systems, AI & machine learning, and knowledge representation. He is currently leading the development of multiple mixed reality and simulation products for AFRL-funded projects. He has recently led the development of several training systems leveraging virtual reality, computer vision, speech recognition, automated assessment, and AAR capabilities for SoarTech. He has spent the last 17 years publishing research on robotics, wearable sensor systems for healthcare, RFID, and adaptive, game-based training. Dr. Craighead has also spent a significant portion of that time designing and building commercial software and hardware for inventory and asset management. He joined SoarTech after spending six years as a partner, chief architect and software engineer at a Florida-based IoT company with products focused on public safety and medical markets. Dr. Craighead was previously the director of the Intelligent Systems Lab at the James A. Haley VA Hospital in Tampa where he was a co-PI, technical lead, and software engineer for a smart home initiative as well as several smaller projects that developed computer and app-based tools for conducting clinical assessments. Dr. Craighead holds two patents: #9,436,298 for an extendable mouth stylus to support electronic device use by quadriplegic individuals and #11,246,806 for a System and Medication Box for Improving Medication Adherence. Dr. Craighead has additional experience conducting field research in autonomous systems, simulation, and training, with past work at the University of South Florida (USF) focused on robot-based urban search and rescue and the use of online, game-based training for distributed operation of mobile robots. He obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science from USF in 2009.
