Biography

Devon Hedrick-Shaw is a teacher educator-scholar and a former bilingual elementary school teacher in Washington Heights, New York City. At the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, he is an Assistant Professor of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education, specializing in language, literacy, and bilingual education. Working from critical, queer, and sociolinguistic perspectives, Dr. Hedrick-Shaw’s interdisciplinary program of research addresses the policies and pedagogies involved with preparing teachers to work with bi/multilingual students. His most recent research explores: 1) teacher learning in the context of "alternative" pathways that seek to recruit, prepare, and retain bilingual educators; and 2) the potential of queer and anti-oppressive pedagogies to facilitate teacher learning and honor LGBTQ+ experiences in bilingual education.
