Professor M C Thorne is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, a Fellow (and Honorary Fellow) of the Society for Radiological Protection, a Visiting Fellow at the Climatic Research Unit, University of East Anglia and a Visiting Professor at Loughborough University. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Radiological Protection and a member of the UK National Dose Assessment Working Group.Clients for studies on radioactive waste management include RWMD and LLWR (UK), SKB (Sweden), Posiva (Finland), Ciemat (Spain) and the State of Nevada (USA).In addition, Professor Thorne is a member of the IAEA MODARIA Working Group 6 on climate change and its implications for radioactive waste disposal. Apart from his work on solid radioactive waste disposal and the remediation of contaminated sites, Professor Thorne has also been involved in a variety of studies relating to radiation shielding, criticality safety assessment, decision making under uncertainty, the safety of developments in the vicinity of nuclear installations, and the transport of radionuclides in the environment. Professor Thorne has also been involved in other types of studies, including evaluation of the impacts of chemotoxic agents in both occupational and environmental contexts, transport safety (including the Channel Tunnel safety case), and the impacts of explosions at gasholders in relation to land-use planning. Professor Thorne is the author of numerous peer-reviewed research papers and of several books. He has appeared as an expert witness at two Public Inquiries in the UK, has presented evidence to the National Academies of Sciences and before the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in the United States, and has presented evidence as an expert witness in several civil actions.
