Biography

Ronald L. Gross, M.D. specializes in treating patients for glaucoma and serves as the Medical Director of the Southern Eye Group in Fairhope, Alabama. Previously he held the Jane McDermott Schott Chair in Ophthalmology and served as Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Ophthalmology at the West Virginia University School of Medicine and was Professor of Ophthalmology and held The Clifton R. McMichael Chair in Ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine and the Cullen Eye Institute in Houston, Texas. He has communicated his findings to the scientific community in more than 160 peer-reviewed publications and has completed over 90 research projects where he served as principal investigator. Dr. Gross has hundreds of national and over 80 international presentations and invited lectures. He is also the editor of the textbook Clinical Glaucoma Management and has authored over 20 book chapters. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Glaucoma and Survey of Ophthalmology, serves as a reviewer for six ophthalmology journals and served on the American Academy of Ophthalmology committees that wrote both the Preferred Practice Patterns and Basic and Clinical Science Course in Glaucoma. Among other honors, Dr. Gross is a member of the American Ophthalmological Society and received the Academy’s Honor Award and Senior Achievement Award. He is also a member of the American Glaucoma Society, currently serving as the Treasurer, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and is an examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology. Dr. Gross is originally from Huntington, West Virginia. He received his undergraduate degree from Rice University, Houston, Texas (cum laude) in 1978. He graduated from the West Virginia University School of Medicine, Morgantown, West Virginia (Alpha Omega Alpha) in 1982. He completed his internship and residency at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, and received his subspecialty fellowship training in glaucoma at Jefferson Medical College, Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
