Biography

Ayan Chatterjee, M.D., M.S.Ed., is a fellowship-trained cataract and glaucoma surgeon. Dr. Chatterjee specializes in numerous advanced techniques, including the use of cutting edge laser-assisted (femtosecond) surgeries and both standard and premium intraocular lenses that correct astigmatism and presbyopia. He has also developed skill sets in glaucoma that provide his patients with the option of state-of-the-art minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (“MIGS”) approaches as well as traditional surgery. Dr. Chatterjee graduated from Princeton University with a degree in Molecular Biology and certificate in French, and then served as a high school science teacher in Philadelphia through Teach for America immediately after college. He obtained both his Medical Doctorate and Masters in Education from the University of Pennsylvania. During medical school he was awarded a two-year fellowship through the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) to study the molecular basis of glaucoma pathogenesis at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary at Harvard Medical School. His work resulted in numerous peer-reviewed publications and ultimately helped identify a potential novel therapeutic target in glaucoma treatment. He was awarded the Stuart L. Fine Research Prize for this work. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Wills Eye Hospital and his clinical glaucoma fellowship at Duke University as a Heed Ophthalmic Fellow, where he trained with some of the world’s leading glaucoma surgeons. Dr. Chatterjee was recognized as a Top 40 Physician Under 40 by the Pennsylvania Medical Society in 2020. He continues to enjoy teaching the next generation of top young ophthalmologists as a faculty member at Wills Eye Hospital.
