José Gabriel Bruzón is a Ph.D. candidate in the Culture, Literacy, and Language program at the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio with several years of working with newly arrived families and students from different cultural backgrounds. He has a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Bilingual Education. José Gabriel has played a pivotal role in his former school’s efforts to support newly arrived students, where he worked closely with core content teachers, school counselors, parent liaisons, and social workers to support newly arrived students and families in their transition to American culture. José Gabriel Bruzon has presented on identifying Latino parental school involvement at several conferences, such as the National Conference of Teachers on English (NCTE), and the National Association of Bilingual Education (NABE). His professional journey has taken him across Ecuador, Cuba, Honduras, and the United States, where he’s had the privilege of coaching and facilitating social and educational programs for diverse populations. He can communicate in several languages such as Spanish, Ecuadorian Sign Language, and beginner-level American Sign Language. José Gabriel Bruzón believes that every person is a valuable and crucial key to the success of any program. He embraces Paulo Freire’s idea that “We all know something, we all ignore something, that is why we always learn.” Finally, José Gabriel Bruzón has been married for fourteen years, has two beautiful boys in elementary school, and recently moved to Bastrop.
